September is the month New York stops being uncomfortable and starts being easy. The average high falls from 28.5C to 24.6C and the overnight low from 20.5C to 16.8C, which is the shift that actually matters, because it is the humidity breaking rather than the daytime peak dropping. Walking the length of the High Line or across Brooklyn Bridge is a pleasure in September in a way it is not in August.

The trap is the diary. New York in late September hosts the United Nations General Assembly high-level week, which typically runs around 22 to 28 September. It brings motorcades, closed avenues on the east side of Midtown, an enormous security footprint and the highest hotel rates of the New York year. If your dates are flexible by even a few days, move them out of that week and you will pay materially less and travel across town faster.

The first half of the month is the sweet spot. The General Assembly high-level week, roughly Tuesday 22 to Monday 28 September, is the peak of that. Beyond the room rates, the practical effect is on the ground: expect rolling closures on First and Second Avenues and around the east forties, unpredictable delays for anything crossing Midtown, and taxi journeys that would normally take fifteen minutes taking three times that. Downtown and Brooklyn are much less affected, which is worth factoring into where you stay.

Events and festivals in September 2026

September is the most heavily dated month in this guide. The US Open finishes on Sunday 13 September, the Feast of San Gennaro runs Thursday 17 to Sunday 27 September, and the United Nations General Assembly high-level week, roughly 22 to 28 September, closes roads across east Midtown.

San Gennaro is the one to build a day around. Eleven days of street food, processions and closed traffic along Mulberry Street, free to walk into, and the single best reason to book the Chinatown and Little Italy food tour in this month rather than any other. It is busiest on the two weekends and calmest on a weekday lunchtime.

The General Assembly is the one to build a day around avoiding. The high-level segment brings heads of state, motorcades and rolling closures to the east side of Midtown for the best part of a week. There is no public access and no upside for a visitor. Stay downtown or in Brooklyn that week, use the subway rather than taxis, and treat any east-west journey across the forties as unpredictable.

The anniversary of 11 September falls on a Friday this year. The memorial plaza and the museum operate differently that day from every other day in the calendar, with commemorative arrangements that affect public access. We are not going to state a specific access rule here, because the arrangements are published each year rather than fixed. Check the museum's own site before booking a timed entry on or immediately around the 11th.
