Is August a good time to visit New York?

Yes, provided you treat the harbour as your air conditioning. Average highs of 28.5C sit on top of 20.5C nights, which is why Manhattan feels hotter than the raw number suggests. In exchange you get 13 hours 51 minutes of daylight and evening water tours that are still in full sun.

New York in August is a humid city, not simply a hot one. The 28.5C average high is not extreme by world standards, but it comes with an average overnight low of 20.5C, and a grid of asphalt and glass that holds that heat after dark. Subway platforms are consistently the hottest place you will stand all trip, often noticeably warmer than the street above them.

The saving grace is the water. New York is a harbour city and the temperature difference between Midtown at street level and the deck of a boat off Battery Park in the same hour is genuinely large. It is also why the ferry to Liberty Island, which most guides treat as a summer default, is better taken on the first sailing of the day than at two in the afternoon.

The rainfall figure surprises people. At 116mm, August is wetter than any month between here and next May, and wetter than November, December, January and February. What differs is the delivery. Summer rain in New York arrives as a convective thunderstorm that dumps most of its total in forty minutes, floods a few intersections and then clears. It rarely writes off a day. Winter rain arrives grey and stays.

Humidity is the number that is not in the table and the one you will feel. With overnight lows averaging 20.5C, the city does not cool down properly between afternoons, so a 28.5C day in New York is a heavier experience than the same reading in a drier climate. What August does have is queue pressure at the outdoor attractions. Events and festivals in August 2026

August is the thinnest month of the year for fixed dated events in New York. The one that matters is the US Open, whose main draw begins on Sunday 30 August at Flushing Meadows and runs into September. Everything else in August is a season rather than a date.

The US Open is the only thing in August that will materially change your trip, and it changes it in two directions. It pushes hotel rates in Queens and eastern Manhattan up from the last weekend of the month, and it puts the 7 train under real pressure in the evenings. If you are not going to the tennis, that is simply congestion to plan around. If you are, the main draw runs from Sunday 30 August through to Sunday 13 September.

The rest of the August calendar is made of seasons rather than dates, which is why the table above lists operating windows. The most useful of them is the rowing boats on the Central Park lake, because it is the one thing in this guide that you cannot book in advance at all.
