Is April a good time to visit New York?

The 6.7C jump in average high from March to April is the largest month-to-month change in this entire guide, and you feel every degree of it. The practical effect is that outdoor plans stop being a gamble. A walk across Brooklyn Bridge, a full afternoon in Central Park or a ferry crossing all become straightforwardly pleasant rather than something to be endured.

April is unusually light on dated events this year, because Easter Sunday fell on 28 March and took the Easter Parade with it into the previous month. The Orchid Show closes on Sunday 25 April and the Central Park rowing season restarts.

Cherry blossom is the other April question, and we are not going to publish a date for it. Peak bloom is confirmed by the city's botanic gardens in real time and cannot be predicted reliably more than about a fortnight out, so the 2027 window is unknowable at the time of writing. Every harbour sailing runs, the Ellis Island hospital tour is back at full frequency, and the zoos have come off the winter hours that shut the Children's Zoo, the Monorail, the Butterfly Garden, the Zoo Shuttle and Budgie Landing from 1 November.

The one new restriction is a booking term rather than a closure. The helicopter operator runs a published no-refund period from Wednesday 14 April to Monday 31 May, which means a flight booked from the 14th onwards cannot be cancelled for a refund. Book in the first fortnight of April and normal terms apply. The heliport still does not fly on Sundays, in any month.

April also marks the return of the long Statue of Liberty crown lead times. Reported waits stretch from the 75 to 90 days typical of the winter back out to roughly 90 to 120 days for the April to September window. Those figures are secondary rather than official, since the National Park Service does not publish a lead time, but the direction is consistent and the practical advice is unchanged: book months ahead or plan on the pedestal.

What to wear and pack for New York in April

Pack for showers and a wide daily range rather than for cold. With a 16.6C average high and a 7.5C average low, mornings and evenings still want a layer, but the winter boots can finally stay at home in a month with a 1cm snowfall normal.
